Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan hit a new record Thursday on his Facebook page by garnering over 15 million fans.

The 71-year-old actor, thanked his admirers for their love and support, with a tweet. The star is quite active on social-networking sites, and has 9.85 million followers on Twitter at the time of writing this article.

Amitabh Bachchan is yet to break the record of Salman Khan, who has the highest Facebook fan following in Bollywood with 19,143,677 likes. He has fewer Twitter followers however, with 7.84 million at the time of writing.

While garnering 15 million Facebook likes is no mean feat, Amitabh Bachchan (or even Salman Khan for that matter) is still quite far from the most-liked celebrity on Facebook - Shakira - who in July after the close of the Fifa World Cup hit a new milestone of 100 million likes, becoming the first person to do so.

The multi-lingual singer, who recently performed at the closing ceremony of the 2014 Brazil World Cup, stands ahead of rivals Eminem and Rihanna, who have amassed 91.9 million and 89 million fans respectively. Shakira was particularly active on the social network during the World Cup, sharing a host of pictures from behind the scenes.

Of course, when it comes to celebrating the follow and like counts of celebrities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ranks amongst the top personalities in the world. His Facebook page had more 20,595,453 likes at the time of writing this article, far ahead of the above mentioned Bollywood celebrities.

Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the third most-followed world leader on Twitter in July, behind only US President Barack Obama and the Pope, and overtook Indonesian President S B Yudhoyono. At the time of writing, he has 5.85 million Twitter followers, which is interestingly far behind Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan.
