Tata Sons Group chairman Cyrus P. Mistry on Thursday laid the foundation stone for F.C. Kohli Centre on Intelligent Systems (KCIS).

It is being built by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) with an investment of Rs. 20 crores at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad.

The centre will carry out high impact research in natural language processing, robotics and cognitive sciences.

The KCIS, coming up with 60,000-square feet built up area, will act as an umbrella organisation at the institute to both strengthen the existing groups and facilitate new activities in related areas.

The new centre will try to attract projects and funding from other entities in the government and industry sectors, coordinate research in related domains across different centres of IIIT Hyderabad, as well as in the institute's research collaboration with other academic institutions in the country.

Telangana Information Technology Minister K. Tarakarama Rao, TCS CEO and MD N. Chandrasekharan, former CEO of TCS F.C. Kohli, and IIIT director P.J. Narayanan attended the ceremony.

KCIS will also focus on entrepreneurship promotion in the intelligent system area as startup companies are the best means to transform the research in the academic labs for the benefit of the society at large, the release said.

TCS last week reported better-than-expected quarterly profits on the back of growth in its key markets of the United States and Europe. It said in a statement that net profit for the three months to June 30 rose 12.9 percent to Rs. 5,709 crores ($900.46 million), from Rs. 5,058 crores for the same period last year.

"North America has rebounded strongly with five large deals and Europe gave two," TCS chief executive N. Chandrasekaran told reporters.
