  • Apple has been said to ditch fingerprint scanner on iPhone 8
  • Galaxy Note 9 smartphone is expected to come out next year

Reports have suggested for months now that the in-screen fingerprint scanner has been a tricky feature to implement for both Apple and Samsung. As per a new report by research firm KGI Securities, the latter company will only be introducing the under-display fingerprint sensor with its Galaxy Note 9 smartphone. This effectively means that the company will be skipping this feature with the next year's Galaxy S series models.

As per KGI's report, Samsung doesn't have to risk the quick implementation of the under-the-display fingerprint scanner with Galaxy S series models as Apple has reportedly dropped its plans to use it on iPhone 8 this year, as pointed out in a 9To5Google report. KGI predicts Samsung will place the fingerprint scanner at the rear of the Galaxy S9 flagship models next year, just like it did with Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

However, in its report, KGI has said that the Galaxy S9 models will come with some other selling points including advanced iris recognition as well as dual cameras. These features have been said to provide the company with some time that will allow it to introduce an under-the-display fingerprint scanner.

Notably, the report has also suggested that Samsung will be switching from Synaptics to Egis to supply the fingerprint sensors on the Galaxy Note 9.

To recall, In June, Vivo and Qualcomm gave the first look of how the under-display fingerprint technology works at Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2017. While several reports have suggested that Apple has ditched the idea of an under-the-display fingerprint scanner, Samsung is expected to retain the fingerprint scanner at the back of Galaxy Note 8, albeit in a different design than Galaxy S8 models.
