Almost half the iOS device (iPhone, iPad and iPod touch) users visiting the App Store have adopted the latest iOS 8 operating system recently rolled out by the firm last week, as per Apple's App Store Distribution page.

The Cupertino-based tech firm updated its App Store Distribution page on Tuesday to show the OS distribution data of App Store visitors on September 21, split between iOS 8, iOS 7 and earlier iOS versions.

According to the App Store Distribution page the majority of users used iOS 7 (49 percent), followed by iOS 8 (46 percent) and the remaining used other earlier versions (5 percent).

According to some of the third-party tracking sites, iOS 7 had a better start than iOS 8. One firm reported that iOS 8 has hit an adoption rate of just 7.3 percent in 24 hours of its public release, compared to 18.2 percent for iOS 7, and 14.8 percent for iOS 6.

Notably, the adoption rate for Google's latest Android version was worse as it took around 11 months for Android 4.4 KitKat to reach 24.5 percent of the worldwide users, according to Google's own figures.

Notably, developers have started optimising their apps for iOS 8. Google and Microsoft also released updates for their respective Chrome and Skype apps for the new iOS 8 operating system.

Last week, Twitter and Instapaper also introduced iOS-optimised app updates. Both the app updates brought a revamped user interface for iOS 8 users.

Apple first announced iOS 8 alongside OS X Yosemite in June this year during the WWDC 2014 event.
