The next iteration in the highly acclaimed Assassin's Creed franchise has been confirmed by Ubisoft, reports IGN. The French video game titan has also mentioned that it will feature a new protagonist, new time period and a new team working on the project as well.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said that the "all-new Assassin's Creed hero, within an all new team and time period" will be "another major leap forward for the franchise".

He further added, "It is the benefit of multiple teams working on multiple chapters of the product, each getting several years to make their versions of an Assassin's Creed game."

There is no word on which studio is going to develop the latest game in the franchise nor there are any details of whether or not it will be developed keeping in mind the next generation consoles.

Now that the word is out, we might expect Ubisoft to tease us with some possible game footage at E3 this year.

Last month, two DLC packs of Assassin's Creed III for the Wii U were announced. The Hidden Secrets Pack was made available on the eShop for $4.99 and the Battle Hardened Pack was available for $9.99. These packs are already available for the PS3, Xbox 360 and the PC.

Ubisoft mentioned then that the next DLC pack for Assassin's Creed 3 titled The Tyranny of King Washington, which is a three-episode trek through George Washington's alternate history, is due to arrive later this year. And it is now slated for a February 19 release.

Assassin's Creed was the fifth installment in the franchise starred a new hero called Connor and the storyline shifted from Europe to the US colonies during the American Revolution.

Pre-orders of the game set a new company record more than double those seen for the title's predecessor, which set a new high in 2011. "Assassin's" videogame sales total more than 38 million units.

Ubisoft is moving into the film business with an adaptation of "Assassin's Creed" sidestepping the Hollywood movie machine by producing the film itself.

With rising star Michael Fassbender of "Prometheus" and "X:Men: First Class" fame signed on to play the title role, the film will be the first produced by Ubisoft Motion Pictures, a division set up by the Paris-based firm.
