The September 1 release date confirms the date that was revealed a day earlier via a leaked video on video game website IGN discovered by a regular of the NeoGAF forums.

Aside from this, it was also revealed that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be creator Hideo Kojima's last game in the series.

"I always say this will be my last Metal Gear. But the games on the series I have personally designed and produced - Metal Gear on MSX,Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, 3, 4, Peace Walker, and now Metal Gear Solid 5 are what constitute a single Metal Gear Saga. With Metal Gear Solid 5, I'm finally closing the loop on this saga. In that sense, this will be the final Metal Gear Solid. Even if the Metal Gear franchise continues, this is the last Metal Gear," Kojima said in the video.
