Captain Marvel has grossed over a billion dollars at the box office worldwide, less than a month after it bowed in cinemas. In the process, it's become the seventh film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and the seventh based on a Marvel Comics property — to cross the $1 billion-figure, after The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War. Thanks to Captain Marvel's new milestone, Marvel Studios has now made $18.5 billion (about Rs. 1,29,187 crores) from its 21 films.
Of the one billion total, Captain Marvel has grossed $358 million (about Rs. 2,461 crores) in its home market of the US, with the rest $645 million (about Rs. 4,426 crores) coming from 54 international markets. China is by far the biggest contributor to the latter, with over $150 million (about Rs. 1,031 crores), followed by the likes of South Korea ($40 million), the UK ($39 million), and Mexico ($30 million). In India, as of the latest available numbers, Captain Marvel had brought in nearly $14 million (about Rs. 96.27 crores).
That's a great way to set the stage for Marvel's highly-awaited blockbuster team-up, Avengers: Endgame, which features Captain Marvel herself and will conclude the story that was set up in last year's Infinity War. Endgame will no doubt be another billion-dollar hit for the studio. In fact, the bigger question is how quickly it will get there and whether it can challenge the all-time leaders of the global box office. Infinity War is fourth overall, behind Avatar, Titanic, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
