While The Witcher 3 is hitting the PC, PlayStation 4 (PS4), and Xbox One on May 19, that date is still almost four months away. Until then, fans of the series can get their fix by checking out The Witcher Battle Arena on January 22 for Android and iOS.
It's a free-to-play Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) set in The Witcher universe, and was announced for worldwide launch by series creator, CD Projekt RED. The Witcher Battle Arena has been co-developed by the company with Fuero Games. It was revealed by CD Projekt Red in July, and was soft-launched in Canada last month.
Players can take part in quick 3-on-3 battles and features characters from The Witcher universe such as Dwarven adventurer Zoltan Chivay, Assassin of Kings Letho Gulet, and the sorceress Philippa Eilhart. However, according to the official website, series' protagonist, monster slayer Geralt of Rivia, is not a playable character.
With mobile games having a bad reputation due to their over reliance on micro-transactions, egging players on at every given chance, the developers claim that while The Witcher Battle Arena features in-app purchases, anything that can be purchased can also be unlocked by playing the game.
Although MOBAs have existed on mobile devices for quite some time now, none of them have really been able to capture the market in a huge way akin to other games on smartphones. Regardless, we'll be able to find out soon enough what makes The Witcher Battle Arena set itself apart with the game being made available on Android and iOS in a couple of days. Windows Phone fans will be seeing the game gracing their platform as well in the future.
