Xiaomi has entered the laptop market in India with its new Mi Notebook 14 and Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition product lines. These models are light and compact, with few bells and whistles. Xiaomi aims to have universal appeal whether you're an office worker, home user, or student. However, if you're expecting shockingly low prices, you might be a little surprised – Xiaomi isn't going to turn the laptop market on its head like it has with smartphones and smart TVs. With prices ranging from Rs. 41,999 (introductory offer) to Rs. 59,999, Xiaomi is aiming for the heart of the laptop market rather than the budget segment.
Xiaomi has launched its Mi Notebook laptops in India, and the Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition is the premium lineup. There are two variants, and the higher-end one (which we have reviewed) has a better processor, faster SSD, and Type-C USB port making it seem like much better value overall. We like how compact this laptop is, with a 14-inch screen in the body the size of most 13.3-inch laptops. The low 1.35kg weight also makes this a great option for those who travel or commute a lot. The Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition has a metal body with a minimalist look, which we really like. However, the narrow screen borders mean that there's no integrated webcam so you'll have to use the included USB unit.
Performance is quite good thanks to the 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10510U CPU and Nvidia GeForce MX350 GPU. The 8GB of DDR4 RAM is unfortunately soldered, but you get a generous 512GB SSD (NVMe on the higher model, SATA on the lower one). You'll be able to play some basic games and older titles at low to medium settings, but the body does get very hot when the components are stressed.
Battery life is also quite good. The downsides are that there's no keyboard backlighting and no SD card slot, which would have been great for productivity. The display is somewhat dull, but you won't mind that too much even when watching videos.
Overall, the Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition is a compelling choice given its portability and price.
