The Wi-Fi only variant of the Gear S smartwatch is now available in Japan at JPY 38,880 (Rs. 20,300 approximately) and is exclusive to carrier AU Mobile in the country.
One of the highlights of the original Samsung Gear S smartwatch was that it worked as a standalone device with its own SIM card for 2G or 3G voice and data connectivity, unlike other smartwatches which are more like accessories for smartphones. The new Gear S model dispenses with cellular connectivity but still offers Bluetooth 4.1 and Wi-Fi.
Other specifications of the Wi-Fi only variant of the Gear S smartwatch are identical to the 3G-enabled one. Running on the company's own Tizen operating system, the Gear S features a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display with a 360x480 pixel resolution. A dual-core 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM powers the smartwatch. The rear panel of the smartwatch features a heart rate sensor and four pogo pins.
It comes with 4GB of storage and is powered by a 300mAh Li-ion battery, rated to deliver two days of ordinary usage. The IP67-certified dust- and water-resistant Gear S shows notifications of text messages, social network updates, calendar alerts and other applications.
It also comes with S Voice functionality for dictating and voice commands, apart from the onscreen keyboard. Samsung has included its own S Health app, apart from Nike+ Running, to help users track their health statistics.
The original Samsung Gear S smartwatch recently went on sale in India priced at Rs. 27,900.
