Apple Watch Will Nudge Users to Stand Up Every Hour: Tim Cook

With the Apple Watch nearing its shipment date in April, Tim Cook has revealed one more feature for the wearable that will keep its users from being lazy or succumbing to the problems of a sedentary lifestyle. While some of the major features were shown at Apple's September event, few were leaked via its companion app last month.

Tim Cook, during the Goldman Sachs technology conference earlier this week, said that the Apple Watch will provide users reminders to move around if they have been sitting at one place for long. He further explained (via CNET) that the watch will 'tap' users on their wrist roughly 50 minutes after they have been sitting.

He also joked that since many Apple employees are wearing the watch, most of them usually end up standing during meetings. "It took a while to get used to, but it's actually really good," Cook said. "A lot of doctors believe sitting is the new cancer."

Cook added that with the numerous directions Apple is seeing app developers take for the Apple Watch platform, will make the smartwatch indispensable to users, where they'd say, "wow, I can't live without this any more." Cook elaborated that the Apple Watch will "change the way people live their lives... One of the biggest surprises people will have when using it is the breadth of what it will do."

The Apple CEO added that smartwatches currently in the market are failures, and do not give consumers what they are looking for. "There are several things called smartwatches that are shipping, but I'm not sure you could name any," taking a direct dig at Android Wear smartwatches.

Apple, according to the latest report, will install safes in Apple Stores for its more expensive 'Watch Edition' smartwatches, just like seen in a jewellery store. The custom-designed safes will come pre-installed with Apple Watch MagSafe chargers so that the units, both retail and demo ones, are charged overnight and are ready to go on display the next day.

It is worth mentioning that last month more details on the 'companion' app for Apple Watch were leaked online giving insights on its clock functions, home screen, accessibility, messages, mirroring iPhone notifications, activity, motion and fitness, Passcode, and more. Apple at the time of launch introduced some features like Heartbeat, Timekeeping, Sketch, Tap and more.
