Yahoo has partnered with Samsung Electronics to deliver news and weather information to the latter's Smart TV devices via a new connected service.
The information will be delivered through a panel, called Yahoo NewsON, which would offer local news articles, videos and weather to Samsung Smart TV users with the click of a remote.
The NewsON panel is now available on Samsung Smart TVs in select countries in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, according to the company.
Users will be able to go to NewsON for a snapshot of the latest news, via their Smart TV remotes. They'll be able to read through to see the summary, full article, or streaming news video related to a current news event through the panel.
NewsON users will also be able to keep a track of weather with weekly forecasts combined with location and weather based photos from Flickr.
The NewsON main screen offers a collage of photos and headlines from Yahoo news stories with a snapshot of current weather conditions for local cities.
Yahoo claims that the NewsON Smart TV app works even in low bandwidth environments.
The NewsON service is the outcome of a multi-year partnership between Samsung and Yahoo which was inked last year. Following the partnership, Yahoo Broadcast Interactivity, powered by its automatic content recognition (ACR) technology, SoundPrint, was to be deployed in Samsung's SyncPlus platform, enabling smart content discovery, advertising and engagement to Samsung's Smart TV devices. It was announced that Samsung Smart TV owners would receive real-time, actionable content that runs alongside and complements TV shows and commercials.
