A new international trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, meant for China, has naturally made its way onto the Internet. While it’s largely similar to what we saw last month, it does provide a couple of glimpses at new information (run away now if you fear any spoilers) – chiefly a kyber crystal around Jyn Erso’s (Felicity Jones) neck, and another shot of Darth Vader.
Most of the other footage is as is from the earlier trailer, except it’s edited in a slower fashion, with plot points expressed clearly. Jyn’s mother makes an appearance this time around, and says: “Trust the Force” as she puts a kyber crystal around her child’s neck. For those unaware, kyber crystals are used to create lightsabers, and were also used in the Death Star.
The new trailer is also on the nose with why Jyn gets recruited into the Rebels’ task force – the message of a weapons test was sent by her father, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) – and Death Star finally gets called out, to make the connection with the original films as clear as possible. The trailer also shows the superweapon in action, with a green beam hitting what appears to be the planet Jedha, a holy site for people close to the Force, including the Jedi.

The fighting scenes in the international trailer have been shown before, though there is a new exchange between Jyn and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna). “We’ll follow your lead,” Cassian says to Jyn, who then replies: “I’m not used to people sticking around when things go bad.” Another new dialogue that comes towards the end is from Jyn as well. “We’ll take the next chance, and the next. Until we win, or the chances are spent,” the character remarks.
For the uninitiated, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set immediately prior to the original Star Wars: A New Hope, and follows a bunch of rebels as they try to get their hands on the plans for the Death Star. The film will release in cinemas worldwide on December 16.
