Netflix is preparing for the day when getting DVDs by mail will be as old-fashioned as going to the video store.

Netflix's streaming service has now surpassed the company's DVD by mail service. And that success could be an indication of things to come.

Online access is now becoming a household staple and various gadgets make it easier to connect high-definition TVs to the Web.

With that in mind, Netflix is adjusting price plans. Fees for DVD delivery are going up, and streaming only options are going down.

One reason for the change, the company says, is to generate money to expand its streaming library.

A limited catalogue is one of the biggest complaints surrounding Netflix's online offerings.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says he envisioned movies being piped through high-speed connections back in 1999.

And that expectation is why Hastings says he chose to name the company Netflix instead of "DVDs-by-mail."
