The telecom regulator has released draft regulations on minimum quality benchmark for mobile internet service under which it will be mandatory for an operator to activate such service within three hours of request from a customer.

"It is necessary to benchmark and monitor the quality of service offered by the service providers of mobile data services with various options open to the implementing agencies so that the interests of consumers are protected," The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said in a statement.

Cellular internet users are poised to rise with the roll-out of 3G and Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) services.

TRAI has sought written comments on the draft regulations from the stakeholders by July 25 and counter comments by Aug 1.
