MTNL to Soon Launch Free Roaming Service

State-run telecom firm MTNL, which offers services in Delhi and Mumbai, will soon launch free roaming scheme, allowing customers to receive calls at no extra cost while travelling across the country.

BSNL already has such a scheme in place.

At present, MTNL customers have to pay roaming charges for incoming calls when they go outside of Delhi and Mumbai.

MTNL Chairman and Managing Director NK Yadav told PTI the scheme will be announced soon and they are finalising the dates.

The government under National Telecom Policy 2012 has set a goal to achieve free roaming gradually.

Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad during a meeting of consultative committee attached to the Ministry of Communication and IT informed Members of Parliament (MPs) that MTNL is planning to launch free roaming soon.

Moreover, MTNL has also increased minimum broadband speed to 2Mbps and is offering free broadband for one month to its landline customers.

According to Trai data released in October, India saw a growth in mobile subscribers in August. The growth in was led by telecom major Bharti Airtel with net subscriber addition of 1.312 million in August, followed by Idea Cellular with 1.167 million users, Vodafone 1.127 million, Tata Teleservices 825,000, BSNL 812,000, Telenor 390,000, Aircel 384,000, Videocon Telecom (with Quadrant) 116,000, and MTNL 18,132.

Back in August, Nokia Networks ended the deadlock over supply of equipment to upgrade state-owned MTNL's network by accepting 'security' clauses put forth by the PSU major.

Nokia said it would to install equipment which would enable MTNL to expand its network in Mumbai and Delhi as well as improve quality of various services.
