TRAI’s MySpeed portal has been updated to reveal 4G download and upload speeds for leading telecom operators in India for the month of September. Reliance Jio continues to leads in terms of download speeds, followed by Vodafone, Idea, and Airtel, with the recorded average 4G speed up marginally from last month. In terms of 4G upload speeds, Idea continues to leads, followed by Vodafone, Jio, and Airtel, an order that remains unchanged from the data for August.
Getting down to specifics, in terms of 4G download speeds, TRAI’s MySpeed portal reports that Reliance Jio offered speeds up to 18.433Mbps, followed by Vodafone at 8.999Mbps, Idea at 8.746Mbps, and Airtel at 8.550Mbps in September 2017. All the speeds are lower than the three-month averages, of 18.5Mbps, 10Mbps, 9.1Mbps, and 8.9Mbps respectively.
In the previous month, Jio recorded peak download of 18.831Mbps, while second-placed Vodafone stood at 9.325Mbps. At third place was Airtel with 9.266Mbps peak download speed, which helped the country’s biggest telecom operator leapfrog Idea Cellular. The 4G peak download speed registered by Idea in August was 8.833Mbps, down from 9.464Mbps in July 2017.
As for 4G upload speeds recorded by MySpeed in September, Idea leads with 6.307Mbps, Vodafone comes second at 5.776Mbps, Jio is third at 4.134Mbps, and Airtel is fourth at 4.088Mbps. Three-month averages for the 4G upload speeds are 6.3Mbps, 5.9Mbps, 4.4Mbps, and 4.3Mbps, respectively.
In August, Idea had the fastest network with 6.292Mbps speed, a small rise from July’s 6.237Mbps. The remaining three telcos, on the other hand, witnessed a fall in their respective 4G peak upload speeds compared to the previous month. Vodafone was the second-fastest at 5.782Mbps, followed by Jio and Airtel at 4.225Mbps and 4.123Mbps, respectively.
A recent report by OpenSignal had said that while Reliance Jio has the biggest 4G network in India, its average speeds were behind that of rival Airtel.
TRAI last week had said it plans to strengthen the MySpeed app and would also make its evaluation method more transparent after consultation with operators. TRAI hopes to come out with a white paper soon on underlying methodology and algorithms used by the said app for calculating data speeds of various service providers.
