After launching attractive prepaid recharge packs with 1GB bundled data per day, Airtel is providing its postpaid customers 30GB data free of cost as part of its Airtel Surprise offer. The new offer, which had been teased last week, is being seen as an effort to stave off Reliance Jio's ultra-low cost plans from luring customers away from the country's largest telecom operator. Airtel postpaid customers will get the free 30GB data for three months, starting March 13.
Monthly cap for Airtel’s free data offer is set at 10GB. This means that Airtel postpaid users who avail this ‘surprise’ will get 10GB of data for three months, totalling 30GB of free data. Customers have until March 31 to claim the free data.
To avail this offer, Airtel postpaid customers need to download the MyAirtel app from Google Play or App Store. The app shows a dialogue box prompting users to claim their surprise, and clicking on the message will provide you with the 10GB data per month for three months. You will be notified of the additional data via a text message.
The new Airtel postpaid offer is similar to what Vodafone offered late last year, providing 10GB of data for free for a month; however, Vodafone had given users 10GB of data at the price of 1GB under its offer, while Airtel is providing it for free.
However, even with the 10GB extra data per month, Airtel is unable to match the 30GB data that Reliance Jio is providing to Jio Prime customers per month at Rs. 303. Notably, the Airtel Surprise data expires after three months, while Jio users will continue to get the 30GB data per month for a year.
Airtel’s new 30GB free data ‘surprise’ comes within days of the country’s biggest telecom operator launching new prepaid recharge packs that provide 1GB bundled data per day. The Rs. 345 Airtel plan puts a restriction of 500MB data consumption during the day and the remaining 500MB data between 12am and 6am. The Rs. 549 pack comes with 1GB of data per day without any cap on timings.
Such plans by Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and other telecom operators are an effort to stave off Reliance Jio, which is providing 4G data at throwaway prices with its Jio Prime offers. Among its postpaid offers, Jio Prime customers get 1GB data per day for a month at Rs. 303, and 2GB daily for a month at Rs. 499.
