Micromax on Wednesday launched a new tablet in India, the Canvas Tab P690, priced at Rs. 8,999. The tablet will be available to buy from retail and online stores from Sunday. At the time of writing, the tablet was not yet listed on the company website.

The Micromax Canvas Tab P690 voice-calling tablet features an 8-inch HD (1280x800 pixel) IPS display and is powered by an unspecified 1.3GHz quad-core Intel Atom processor (turbo up to 1.83GHz) coupled with 1GB of RAM. While it runs on Android 4.4 KitKat, Micromax says an upgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop is on the cards, but with no time-frame provided.

The Canvas Tab P690 bears 8GB of built-in storage that is expandable via microSD card (up to 32GB). It sports a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Connectivity options include 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS. It features a 4000mAh battery that's rated to deliver up to 180 hours of standby time.

Micromax has preloaded apps such as Hello TV, Saavn, Kindle, Saavn, NewsHunt, SwiftKey, WPS Office, and various games on the Canvas Tab P690. The company says users will get 6 free ebooks from Kindle, 3 months premium subscription to Saavn, 6 months premium subscription to Truecaller, 1 month subscription to Hello TV, in-app freebies in Angry Birds and Angry Birds GO, and, free points on the MAd app, all accounting for roughly Rs. 3,000 worth of free content. The company is also touting a free 'premium flip cover' worth Rs. 1,500.

Commenting on the launch, Vineet Taneja, CEO, Micromax Informatics, said, "Since January, we've been attaining strong growth of 30 percent month-on-month with our new Canvas Tab portfolio, and believe that we are set for market leadership in the key segment of Rs. 6,000-Rs. 15,000 that we operate in. Our role as category leaders will be to grow the category itself by bringing in first-time users by demonstrating how tablets can enable a connected, portable and yet more immersive experience to our content-hungry consumers."
