MapmyIndia on Monday launched a new Android-based navigation tablet in India at Rs. 17,990, called Buzz. The tablet is being pegged as the 'ideal rear-seat companion for a smart/connected car' by the mapping company, which is also touting the device's 'enterprise-grade GPS chipset.'

The MapmyIndia Buzz is an Android 4.2 Jelly Bean-based tablet with a 7-inch TFT LCD display (resolution unspecified). It is powered by an unnamed dual-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor, however, the company has not detailed the amount of system memory (RAM) available on the device.

For the navigation device, the MapmyIndia Buzz tablet glaringly lacks built-in 3G connectivity, but does offer support via an external 3G dongle. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, GPS, Micro-USB, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Other specifications of the MapmyIndia Buzz navigation tablet include 8GB of built-in storage that is expandable via microSD card (up to 32GB), a 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 3.7V lithium-polymer battery. It has dimensions of 181.6x120.9x10.6mm, however, no weight has been provided.

The company is also touting the customised user interface of the MapmyIndia Buzz tablet that is supposedly suited for a 'smart car' experience. The company says a glance at the tablet will give users key information on the move, as the home screen can be set to provide location-based information of the user's choice, from weather to news, recommendations, points of interest, speed alerts and more.

Also onboard the MapmyIndia Buzz are the company's social location apps (Locate, Explore, ReachMe and MapmyIndia Maps), which allow users to track, interact, follow, discover new places, endorse places visited, organise parties and more with their contacts.

Specifically, the MapmyIndia Buzz tablet comes with MapmyIndia Maps v8.1, said to be the latest version by the company. It will offer voice guidance in 10 Indian regional languages and maps for 10 cities in Hindi text. The company is touting the 10.54 million Points of Interests listed, over 2 million kilometres road network, 7,068 cities at street level with house address level data for 80 cities, apart from listing of 600,000 villages, and 3D/ 2D landmarks in 86 cities.

"MapmyIndia has been at the forefront of offering enabling solutions for the smart/connected car combining, entertainment, productivity and navigation. We want to empower Indians with a choice to utilize their travel time the way they want to. With MapmyIndia Buzz they can reach out to friends, keep on working or just have fun, making travel a more gratifying and fulfilling experience," says Rakesh Verma, Managing Director, MapmyIndia.
