Asus is reportedly working on a 3G-enabled version of Google's Nexus 7 tablet that may release in about six weeks, claims Paul O'Brien at MoDaCo. There are no details regarding the regions, variants or pricing of the tablet, but O'Brien credits his "very well placed insider" for the news.

The Android-based tablet from Google was first announced at the Google I/O event in June. Since its launch, the tablet got an encouraging response and flew off store shelves. The Nexus 7 competing with the likes of the rumoured iPad Mini and Amazon's Kindle Fire and has received positive reviews from the tech fraternity.

In July, the tablet surpassed the company's expectations when the 16GB version of the Jelly Bean-running device went out of stock at the Google Play store in the US and UK. Google is still accepting orders for the 8GB version priced at $199. If users want to purchase the $249 version of the tablet, they are being asked to sign up for an e-mail notification when it is back in stock.

Google is leaving no stone unturned with regards to promoting the Nexus 7, which was evident by a rare ad posted on the search engine's home page recently. Prior to this, Google had also released its first video YouTube commercial for the tablet showing off a few capabilities of the device.

For those unaware, the Nexus 7 runs on Android Jelly Bean and is powered by a Tegra 3 quad-core processor under the hood. It features a 1280x800 HD display and has 1GB RAM. The 8GB version is priced at $199 while the 16GB variant costs $249.
