  • Sony Xperia L "the camera experts camera phone"
Abdul Moiz (May 8, 2014) on Gadgets 360
The handset doesn't have a spectacular specification, but it all works well as a package. You get a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM and Android 4.1 - not much on paper, compared to the near-2GHz monsters we're now seeing on premium smartphones, but I've no complaints about the handset's performance. Apps open and shut with a snap and animations are silky-smooth. As expected, the phone's performance in Sunspider 1.0 JavaScript benchmark wasn't spectacular. It completed the test in 2,646ms using the default Chrome browser, which is twice as long as I saw from the Xperia SP with its 1.7GHz dual-core chip. Chrome is slow in Sunspider, but even with the faster Dolphin browser I only saw 1,564ms, which is very much a middling result. Subjectively, this average benchmark score didn?t make much difference to the phone's web browsing performance. The Maps app glides smoothly under your finger, and there's barely a hesitation while panning smoothly around web pages - only a barely perceptible slowdown when scrolling past a large image. When compared side by side with a Samsung Galaxy S3, the more powerful S3 had slightly smoother browsing, but there's not much in it. You shouldn?t have a problem with gaming, as the Xperia L's processor produced a competent performance in the 3DMark benchmark. 4074 is a much better score than I expect to see from a phone at this price, and is up with much more expensive phones such as the HTC One X+. It's also quicker in 3D games than the Samsung Galaxy S3, showing you're getting better 3D performance than last year's premium handsets. I was also impressed with the Xperia L's screen. Again, its 854x480 resolution is pretty standard for a phone at this price, and you have to zoom in to read text on web pages, but I saw bright whites and punchy colours. The Xperia L's LCD display doesn?t have the true blacks of an AMOLED screen, but blacks are still very deep. It's a high-quality display for a relatively inexpensive handset. Sony bills the Xperia L as the "camera experts? camera phone", and I was impressed by the performance of its backside-illuminated camera sensor. A backside-illuminated sensor has the sensor's circuitry on the rear rather than at the front, so there's no wiring in the way of light This should lead to better image quality under low light, and the Xperia L takes some of the best low-light photos I've seen, with far more detail and less than noise than the Samsung Galaxy S4's shots. Contrast was impressive, with no sign of overexposure in lighter areas even on a sunlit day, but details became muddy when I zoomed in, showing the limits of the Xperia L's eight megapixels. reaching the sensor. Video quality was acceptable under reasonable lighting, but under low light the frame rate dropped right down, making footage seriously jerky - this isn?t a phone to film gigs or nights out. its a good buy under 15000 but u can also get MOto g who are not brand consious

  • It is a good phone in the price range of 12-13k
Abhishek Chatrani (May 2, 2014) on Gadgets 360
Picture quality Sony always provide the best Display for its phone and this also doesn't disappoint us. It has a resolution of 480x854 pixels which is not so bad with these price range. Phone speed It comes with a processor of 1 ghz dual core snapdragon processor which is a perfect match with its 1 GB ram which makes the phone more powerful. Camera It has a rear camera of 8MP with sweep panorama, smile detection and more features. Sony provides great camera quality for its phone that we have seen in the past.front camera of 0.3MP comes in handy for video calls and the quality is not so bad ANDROID It comes with a OS of 4.1.2 which is upgraded with 4.2.2 here we are a little disappointed because the world is moving so fast everyone needs the latest technology kitkat OS could have made it better OVERALL REVIEW I am giving it 3.4 rating out of 5 for its camera quality and fast processor it is a good phone within its price range. It's not a bad buy if you love Sony.

  • Delightful Experience :)
Mangesh Khanna (Aug 19, 2014) on Gadgets 360
I have been using my Sony Xperia L from last 10 months. I bought this phone from Flipkart with goodies because of Diwali offer. Now, coming back to the phone. Sony has done quite a decent job in upgrading Sony Xperia J but still maintaining the look and feel of the device almost alike. Ever after I bought Xperia L, the device has never disappointed me. Design: The device has a sleek and slender look and feel. It easily slips into your pant pocket no matter how tight it is and you wont even feel that you are carrying a 4.3inch device. The weight, at 137grams also seems quite manageable. The thin chrome lining throughout the perimeter of the device coupled with an aluminum power switch gives the phone a touch of elegance. The back side of the phone hosts an 8 mega-pixel camera with chrome finished circumference along with flash. Display: The screen looks quite attractive and the image is crisp. The touch function is also highly responsive. The display as in Xperia J does not have a Corning Gorilla Glass, which I feel at this price should have been a must but anyways the screen surface is scratch resistant which will serve the purpose. I would advice to keep the screen guard on as it will avoid unwanted scratches and stains on your screen. Camera: The camera is equipped with the highly sensitive Exmor R sensor, which helps to capture sharp photos and videos even in low lighting conditions. It can shoot images at various resolutions and as expected the image quality with loads of features and Sony expertise, is quite remarkable. Battery: The device has a 1750 mAh battery. If charged in the morning, one can expect to have at least 50% charge remaining after 12 hrs of normal operations which includes 1hr on call and 1hr of surfing. Moreover, the stamina mode also helps in conserving battery charge by pausing Wi-Fi connection, data traffic and several power consuming applications when the screen is inactive. This is an in-built feature provided by Sony, which helps us in avoiding dependency on other third party software. Processor and Memory: It has a 1 GHz Qualcomm, Dual Core processor with 1 GB RAM, 8GB internal memory and extendable storage of upto 32 GB. As far as my experience goes the phone works without any lags and without getting stuck. Apart from the features that I have mentioned above, this phone is an absolute delight to work with. I am completely satisfied with the product and would give a rating of 5/5 for this wonderful gadget.

it make me feel like i m holding a premium smart phone in my hands . it got really coool design. i like to call it a play station as it have similar looks to it best feature: .camera 8 mp it a piece of a cake for camera guys really good colour capturing performance as it have exmor rs lens which it shares with its big brother z but when zoomed pics it had a lil noise but camera did fine job and also have a 0.3 mp front camera other good features: .despite a 1 ghz dual core processor xperia l is not ashamed of it's engine as it delivers quite good performance it was quite good when i switched between apps didn't lagged thanks to 1 gb ram .4.3 inch screen(480x854) which produces really good colors .it raned all games i played like fifa 14,asphalt 8,gt racing 2 and many more thanks to adreno 305 did good job at acceptable frame rate it now runs on 4.2.2 as u have to update battery life was lil under power..but downloaded battery saver it did quite surprising job after that helped a lot 8 gb storage in-buit and expandable verdict: if ur a camera guy u can go for it under 14k price tag if ur a specs freak that u should pass this choice

  • it is a smart phone ....but not good
Midhun Kumar (May 23, 2014) on Gadgets 360
Pros : *features like NFC, JELLY BEAN, Software updates are + points 1) 4.3 inch screen wid higher resolution (compared 2 Grand) 2) Decent Speed & Performance (no lags or hangs) 3) Gaming Beast..(Temple Run 2, Subway Surf, Dead Trigger, etc ) 4) Sony's Camera wid Flash (for me d flash is not working at 55% battery) :-( i don't know whats d problem..!! 5) Dual Core wid 1 GB Ram 6) Slim & Attractive Design 7) Gud Call Quality 8) In Budget & JELLY BEAN.. ;-) Cons : 1) BATTERY !!! the battery last only a single day even with normal use..!! should have a 2100 mAh.. 2) Camera Flash - Check out the camera flash before buying, for me it does not work when the battery is at 55% or below.. Then wat the use of it ?? Even at 50% battery we cannot use it as a Flashlight/ Torch..!! 3) Internal Memory could be much better.. at a cheaper price Samsung's S Advance provides 16 GB internal battery Verdict = Awesome phone.. but with little less Battery Backup..!! Updates are served 2 improve the overall performance & to fix issues & bugs.. so don't worry.. :) *Alternatives - Samsung Galaxy Grand, Samsung Galaxy S Advance (even Lg devices but they are not so popular)

  • the best overall midrange phone - tough competitor to moto g (used it for 7 months now)
Vighnesh Kadam (May 21, 2014) on Gadgets 360
sony xperia l was released with its bigger brothers the xperia sp and the xperia z back in 2013. the xperia l was never meant to be a premium smartphone, but once you look at its price and competitors it was for sure the best looking device out there. Display:- the xperia l has a 4.3 inch tft lcd display with a resolution of 480*854 at 228 ppi . well what would you expect from a low to midrange android phone. but surprisongly it wont dissapoint you . the colors are accurate with good contrast levels .the viewing angles could have been better.overall a decent display build quality:- well starting with the dimensions here is what takes the xperia l out of other crowd ..its curved back which looks classy and it provides a good grip too .. the rubberized back finish makes it stand out from the other manufacturers having cheap build quality . it is not that slim and not that fat too ... well it varies in the dimensions because of its curved back . but it is pretty good to hold .overall a rich and premium looking phone performance:- coming to performance well it is pretty good here too .it packs a qualcomm snapdragon s4 pro chipset clocked at 1 ghz with 2 cores paired with an adreno 305 gpu ... as far as the menory is concerned it has 1 gig of ram with 8 gigs of onboard storage which is expandable via micro sd upto 32 gigs . well let me tell you the performance ends up pretty damn well . i mean most of the apps work just fine and it just gets the job done with some hiccups here and there . you may face minimal lag while playing graphically intensive games like mc4, asphalt 8(at highest settings) etc. overall great performance at that price camera:- it sports an 8 mp camera with an exmor rs sensor, and the camera is good ,but dont expect too much from it. it is great for outdoor photos with natural lighting and the pictures come out to be great. while in indoors and low lighting ,it suffers .pictures come out to be grainy and it looks like a mess .while that on video quality it captures 720p at 30fps and the video quality is also well and good .overall a decent camera at that price. software:- xperia l runs on android 4.2.2 jellybean with sony's custom UI on the top ..the UI is very smooth and there are almost no stutters while scrolling through pages and navigating thru homescreens. you may face some software bugs like proximity sensor etc but that can be fixed with an update. battery:- the 1750 mAh battery provides almost full day of charge with low to moderate usage, but with heavy use you may have to charge it twice a day pricing:- the xperia l is priced at about 14500rs approx. verdict:- well if you want the sony features and the looks and also a great performing phone without spending lot of cash, the sony xperia l is the right choice for you. it would not dissapoint you.

    Eukebi . (Sep 6, 2014) on Gadgets 360
Within 15 days of its purchase on 15 Aug 2014, I had to visit the Reliance Digital, from where it was purchased, thrice. It "hanged" a couple of times. In other times a display was appearing "USSD code running" and it was not possible to switch of the phone till the battery was taken out. On all these occasions the retailers' persons resorted to resetting and reloading with loss of stored data, in consequence. In fact this is the second set that was offered to me after the first was considered to have software problem. It is felt there is some inherent deficiency in design which may be reason of its rare appearance in the showrooms in Bangalore. Overall I have a feeling of opting for a wrong set and looking to get rid of the same without knowing how. I would not rate it even with a single star.

  • Very good so far for mid-segment phone
Chin (May 1, 2013) on Flipkart
I got my Xperia L after bit of research about mid-range android smartphones. Here are my impressions so far: 1) Even though its just 1 Ghz Dual core, performance is very impressive (coming from previous galaxy note user). Its Qualcomm's s4 play SoC Krait-based architecture, which means its much faster than older dual core processor android phones (like HTC Desire X). Infact, on benchmark tests its on par or exceeds the performance of Samsung Quattro/ Grand even though they may have more cores/ faster clock speeds. Don't go by numbers alone - SoC architecture matters ! 2) Jelly bean 4.1.2 is crisp and smooth. No lag. Not a lot of bloatware (some of which can be deleted). Considering it was just launched in April 2013, there are good chances SONY will upgrade this to Android 5.0 in the upcoming year (Biggest plus point if you are buying a mid-range phone). 3) Display is decent at 228 ppi (though not extraordinary but then this is good for mid-range phone). Colours are vivid compared to LG's IPS display. Gorilla glass is missing. 4) Form factor and built is impressive (again not a fan of cheap plastic built quality of Samsung phones). Size is just about right -not too big, not too small 5) Even though SONY is marketing this as a top notch camera phone in mid-segment, camera quality remains to be seen. Colours are vivid but there is some noise. Hopefully, SONY will improve auto-mode performance with software updates. I am yet to fully test the capabilities and picture quality. 6) Battery life is good. Also, the phone is bundled with SONY STAMINA and LOW BATTERY modes for enhanced battery life. No need to download third-party apps for power management. In-built battery apps tend to be more reliable and robust. 7) It supports both MTP (didn't work in ubuntu 13) and USB mass storage modes to connect the PC. 8) You cannot shoot 1080p videos and also cannot playback 1080p videos (Why ??) 9) It has a nice led to alert you about notifications. UPDATE: 1) I ran Antutu benchmarks on the phone and got scores around 10700. Antutu benchmark tests CPU, RAM, 2d and 3d graphics, SD card read/writes capabilities of the phone. Higher the score, better it is. To put this score into perspective, older Samsung flagship phones Galaxy S2 scores around 9000 and Galaxy note 1 scores around 10200. Samsung galaxy grand duos scores around 7000. LG II p715 is around 7000. Samsung galaxy quattro (with all its quad cores) manages around 11000. Galaxy S3, HTC one x, Xperia SP score around 14000 to 16000 mark. Nexus 4 is around 17500. HTC one and Xperia Z hit 20000+ scores. 2) The battery endurance rating (tested by GSMArena) of Xperia L is 39 hours (i.e. you need to recharge the phone every 39 hours with 1 hour of calls, 1 hour of web browsing and 1 hour of video playback). Talk time is 12:30 hours, web browsing is 6:40 hours. You can get detailed battery results on GSMarena website. These results are quite decent and phone can easily last a day as long as display brightness is set to AUTO. 3) The phone comes equipped with NFC chip. This is quite handy to "beam" files to other NFC-equipped phones. Its a nice to have feature (typically bundled with high end phones). The full potential of NFC is yet to be tapped (e.g. NFC is already being used for mobile payments in US). 4) Camera quality can be good if you learn how to tweak around with some settings such as metering, white balance, focus and HDR. Auto mode is not always optimal. There is loss of texture and sharpness at times (seems like even Xperia Z and Xperia SP suffer from similar problems). SONY claims to use top-notch optics for the camera so issue could be with software. Hoping that future software upgrades will enhance sharpness. Again, if I am looking for a sub-20k phone, I bet only Galaxy grand camera beats this phone as of date. 5) The phone supports DLNA for media sharing with DLNA-enabled televisions. 6) The audio quality is very crisp and clear.

I was waiting for this phone from last month and finally I buy it on 18 May form Sony Center. The looks of the phone is very nice. One GB ram make it faster for playing the games. Camera of this phone is excellent. I loving it.. But the secondary is not as good for this price range it should be minimum 1.3 MP. Overall the phone is excellent. It is completely value for money product from Sony.

Well initially I was going to buy this phone from Flipkart, but instead I got it for 18k after bargaining from the Sony Store. About the product, its a pretty nice phone although I would have liked to have features like Bravia screen, glonass, hd screen. But that would be asking too much considering that its a mid-end phone (rather its a low-end phones these days). And for 18k, I couldn't have asked for more. Really nice product Sony! I had one problem with the phone though. It was really hard to open the back cover and I ended up hurting myself a bit. Also the micro-sd slot is under there so Sony should have made the cover easier to open. But that's not a big deal.

Finally after a long wait I got my Sony Xperia L. I bought this phone from a Sony exclusive brand outlet. I bought my xperia l from a local retailer in dehradun and i am very impressed with this phone. It looks like a million bucks, taking design cues from its very beautiful younger sibling the Xperia J. The power button looks and feels really nice. The build quality and feel of the phone is vary nice specially when compared to samsung. The display is pretty nice. Its just the right size. Text and pictures appear quite crisp and videos look quite good too. The camera is satisfactory but i was expecting better. My phone's led flash works well and it does work even when battery is below 50%(worked at 40%). Performance is pretty good. The processor is snappy and 1gb ram is adequate with around 200mb always free. There are no lags thanks to jellybean's project butter. Graphics are decent. Virtua tennis, temple run 2 and nfs most wanted work without a glitch. antutu score was 9312. Battery is nothing to boast about but lasts a day. It is the best at this price bracket. Better than the cheaper grand quattro which has terrible build quality and an outdated processor and graphics chip. Overall it is a great phone.

It is just the best phone in this range, 1 GHz dual core processor plus 1 GB ram, jelly bean. what else do we need guys. and about the camera, it is just awesome and better than the galaxy note's camera. phone never lags and its sleek design makes it very sexy and handy. the LED lighting and all that stuff makes the phone more beautiful. The main feature of this phone is camera which also having HDR. i would definitely suggest to buy this one rather than galaxy grand and grand quattro. thanks

this is really a super phone and trust me guys i have been using it and it runs almst everythng hassle free. video quality is awsme, heavy games run widout any hicckup, the overall look is really good,it has a rubbery finish at its back that makes it easy to hold and as far as the technicalities are concernd it is the best pick in this price as u can see that it has got all the features one can ask for. i only faced a bit of a problem with its headphone as it is not too good and is a bit big and uncomfortable otherwise as far as now i hve no complains regrding it. last but not the least always remembr that there is no perfect phone or a perfect device overall. it is all bout what you want in your device and the budget you can afford so instead of reading reviews and watching the loopholes in a device i think you shld just go and try it yourself and trust me you won't say no this BIGGIEEE!!!!

After doing a lot of research for good phones under 20k, i bought this phone. Build quality: It has an adequate screen size of 4.3 inches which is neither too big, nor too small and much easier to handleunlike other monster phones like the samsung galaxy grand. Though it doesn't have gorilla glass, its still made of scratch-resistant glass which is quite good. The screen has sloping ends at the top and bottom and rounded at the sides and has an aluminium strip bordering the display which feels like premium quality. The back is good quality matte plastic and is slightly curved inside. Overall, the phone feels good to hold but sometimes it does tend to slip due to its matte finish. Display: It has a 480p display with 228 ppi which is quite decent. Colours look natural and not too overexposed. It supports 720p playback and video-recording but no 1080p playback which is a little disappointing, but not a deal-breaker. User Interface: The sony interface takes a little time to get used to, and is not as intuitive as Samsung, Apple or HTC. But with time, it becomes a treat to use it. Pre-installed apps like Sony Select (it recommends apps for your phone model) are a boon. Camera: It has an 8 MP camera with the sony EXMOR sensor which does a good job at capturing photos even during low lighting. It has a strong LED flash which does a decent job. Front camera is 0.8 MP which could have been better. Nevertheless, it is capable of video chatting. Overall, a great camera.....but not the best. OS: It comes with android 4.1.2 (Jellybean) out of the box and upgradable to 4.2.2. Connectivity: It has the usual options like Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth 4.0, and yes, it does support NFC which is quite surprising. Processor and RAM: It has a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Krait CPU running at 1 GHz and has a 1 GB RAM. Don't think that since its dual core, it wont match up to the quad-core phones like samsung quattro, micromax or Karbonn. Its newer chipset with Krait architecture is the latest and its perfomance is on par with other sub-20k phones. Games like critical strike portable, air navy fighters, dead trigger and nfs run flawlessly. This phone is also Playstation certified!! Battery: With a 1750 mAh battery, this phone has enough juice to run an entire day with medium to heavy usage. It has the Sony Stamina Mode which is a feature seen in high end sony phone like Xperia SP and Xperia Z and does a phenomenal job to preserve battery. Very Impressive from Sony. Final word: Xperia L is the most premium phone under 20k with a good camera and great performance. There are a few downsides like no 1080p playback and the phones tend to heat up a little while running intensive apps. But this phone is no doubt the BEST and could prove to be a game-changer for Sony. Alternatives: Galaxy Grand -Rs 18000 For a slightly higher budget you can get the Xperia SP which is breaking perfomance records in all benchmark tests.
