Facebook has released its '2013 Year in Review' report, revealing the top trends of 2013, from most talked about topics, and top life events, to the top-check in locations.

While Narendra Modi was the most talked about topic in India, Pope Francis took the top honours worldwide. Sachin Tendulkar, iPhone 5s, Raghuram Rajan, and Mangalyaan also featured amongst the most frequently discussed topics in India. Interestingly, Sukhdev Dhaba at Murthal (near Delhi) and the Golden Temple in Amritsar were the top 'checked-in' places in India.

Apart from India's year in review, users can also check out their own year in review, with the biggest highlights of the year for them, from life events to popular posts they've shared. The personalised look back also includes the option to see highlights and popular posts by friends. Users can see their year in review here: facebook.com/yearinreview.

Global lists of top life events, check-ins, and most talked about topics, can be found on FacebookStories.com, specifically, here. Users can also check out the 'most talked about topics near them,' by selecting a country.

The disparities between India's top trends and global top trends, are also interesting to behold. In 'top life events' for example, the global list has such oddballs as 'quit the habit', 'got a piercing' and 'got a pet,' which don't feature in India's list at all - leaving us to consider how these trends are affected by social conventions and mores, and how much by the average Indian's willingness to share.

Facebook also revealed its methodology for how it found the top Indian trends of 2013. For 'top life events and check-ins,' Facebook looked at which life events and places generated the most posts and check-ins in 2013, and then used the data to create global and country-level rankings.

For 'most talked about topics,' Facebook measured how many posts in 2013 mentioned a specific topic and then ranked those topics based on the overall number of mentions to create each list. Mentions included both the term itself and related hashtags. For example, both "Here at #Sachin's last match" and "Proud to be at the Sachin's match" would be calculated as part of the buzz related to a single event.

Here are Facebook's lists for the top trends of 2013.
