Narendra Modi, the chief minister of Gujarat, is in the running for the Must-Follow Politician on Social Media, one of the 28  categories that are part of the 5th Annual Mashable Awards.  He is the only non-American politician nominated for the award.

The Must-Follow Politician on Social Media category honors the reader's choice for the politician who best uses Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Google+, Tumblr or other mainstream social networking sites.  Mr Modi is up against leaders like Barack Obama, whose official twitter account has 11 million followers.  Mr Modi currently has 425,675 followers on twitter; he blogs regularly.   Other contenders in the same category include Cory Booker, Ron Paul, Buddy Roemer, Bernie Sanders and Herman Cain, all American politicians.
