Twitter on Tuesday announced the global roll-out of its Facebook-like profile redesign, which first began gradually rolling out earlier this month.
The announcement came via Twitter's official blog post, as well as through personalised emails sent to users. The blog post said, "Introducing new Twitter web profiles. Now you can add a larger profile photo. Customize your header. Highlight your greatest moment. See all your Tweets, photos, and videos in one place. And find interesting people to follow - faster than ever"
The profile redesign sees Twitter's inclusion of header images, which resemble Facebook's cover photos, that users see when visiting someone else's profile. The image can be cropped and adjusted according to user preference while uploading, just like a Facebook cover photo. Apart from pointing users to a webpage that would help them set up a new profile, Twitter also said that custom header images are also available in its Flickr library for those that are having a hard time figuring out what they want to use.
The other new features seen in the redesigned Twitter profiles include a major cosmetic update that was noticed when the update first rolled out earlier this month. Users can "pin" a tweet to stay at the top of their feed, a rare instance of Twitter departing from the continuously rolling format that has defined the service. Tweets that have received more retweets or replies will also appear slightly larger to spur more user engagement. The social platform will enable users to filter tweets from the options - Tweets, Tweets with photos/videos, or Tweets and replies.
The Twitter update comes in line with what Dick Costolo, Twitter's CEO, mentioned earlier this month. It has been said that the redesign and features come after the website's all-time low in user growth figures in the last quarter.
