In our weekly column Personally Tech we talk to people from all walks of life to learn about the apps and gadgets that they love and can't live without. Technology has changed the way we all live and work, in myriad ways.
This week we spoke to Dinesh Aggarwal, Joint Managing Director, Anchor Electricals. You probably know the company thanks to the electrical fixtures that it makes, from switches, to wires, to lights and fans. Aggarwal himself is a technology enthusiast, who won't leave home without his iPad. We talked about the apps and gadgets that he loves and can't live without. Read on to know more.
1. Describe your technology setup - what computer/ phone/ tablet/ camera/ gaming console/ other gadgets do you use?
My Dell Latitude E 4200 laptop at work, and my Panasonic P81 smartphone for calls, and for official and personal email access when out of office. I use my iPad Air for reading books, websites and tracking news, for staying in touch with friends and sometimes, gaming.
When I'm traveling, my phone always goes with me, but I also like to carry my two cameras, I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ57 and a Canon D 1200 DSLR for photography.
I also have a Nintendo Wii at home; we play on it when my son's around from college.
2. What are three apps (mobile/ tablet or PC/ Mac) you couldn't live without?
Email is obviously important, and I use Gmail on my phone, and apart from that, on my phone I also use WhatsApp to keep in touch. I have ToI and ET on my iPad, and I use the LinkedIn app to see what people in my work network are sharing.
3. What is the one gadget (other than your phone) you never travel without?
My iPad.
4. What is your dream gadget/ technology setup?
What I want is a combination of my smartphone, my iPad and a laptop. In size it should be like an iPhone 6, but with a provision to unfold a large screen, and a large size keyboard when required.
It needs to have more battery storage (for at least 10 hours of continuous use) and it should connect wirelessly through Bluetooth or NFC to accessories like printers, speakers, and projectors.
5. How has technology changed the way in which you work?
Technology has led to a tremendous improvement in productivity as work can be done when in car, on [a] plane, at airport etc. One is not stressed about "being in a place to conduct your work".
You can execute many meetings (including Interviews) on a single day through combination of teleconferencing and video calls. The devices and the various apps, in conjunction with ubiquitous 3G access, allow multitasking.
Also, the fact that one's social commitments can also be simultaneous met with through the devices allows mental freedom to focus on work. I am more informed and thus more effective especially when meeting a customer or a potential partner.
