Obi Mobiles made its debut in India last year as a provider of low-cost Android smartphones. What made this company different from numerous others newcomers is that it had a strong backer; ex-Apple CEO John Sculley to be precise. However, Obi Mobiles seemed like every other company, picking an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) from China to design and manufacture phones to sell under its own name. The company's debut offering, the Obi Octopus S520 (Review | Pictures) only focused on specifications but failed to address other key areas like aesthetics and user experience.
The Obi Worldphone SF1 is a striking handset in the sub-Rs. 15,000 price segment. The raised full-HD display is crisp and delivers punchy colours. The phone also has good ergonomics thanks to the matte-finish texture on the body. The octa-core Qualcomm SoC delivers good performance in games and the 3GB of RAM helps in multitasking. The phone suffers from an annoying stutter throughout the interface which we hope can be fixed with a software update. Camera performance is good for macros and landscapes in daylight but low-light shots could have been a lot better. Battery life is good and the phone supports fast charging too. Overall, the SF1 is a good package and will be even better once the software glitches are fixed.
