One of the features that really stands out for the Sony Xperia Z series, including the Sony Xperia Z3 is that the phones are all dust and water-resistant. As noted in the review, always make sure that the flaps are all closed before letting the phone get wet.
But while a water resistant phone is handy for those times when you drop it in the sink or get caught in the rain, there aren't too many apps that make use of this feature. In August, Sony launched a suite of six underwater apps that highlight the feature.
Plantimal is a virtual plant that you have to water daily to make it grow, and if you don't water it on time then it can even wither and die.
Photo Lab is another cool app that Xperia Z3 users can download - it lets you experience the sense of actually developing a picture - after you take a click, you have to hold the phone underwater to make the image develop, as if you were giving it a bromide bath.
Aside from Sony's official apps, if you have a water-resistant phone, you can also try Aqua Camera Pro - this free app lets you take pictures using the proximity sensor, so you don't even need to touch the screen to take a shot. The app was developed specifically for the Xperia Z family, and underwater autofocus, along with camera effects.
And if you're bored at the swimming pool, check out Sink Sunk by Sony - it's a simple game where you tilt the phone to steer your submarine - but for it to work, your little submersible had better be submerged.
There are those who would dismiss these apps as gimmicks, but the important thing is that they show how you the water-resistance feature can allow app developers to innovate, and should lead to even more interesting apps coming from third-party developers.
