Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Reportedly Explodes in Pocket, Company Launches Investigation

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi says it has initiated an investigation after a report about an alleging Redmi Note 4 explosion was widely circulated on social media over the weekend.

Bhavana Suryakiran, a resident of East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh, was riding a bike over the weekend when the Redmi Note 4 smartphone allegedly exploded in his pocket, according to a local media report.

Suryakiran, who claims to have purchased the smartphone from Flipkart, intends to take the matter to the court and seek damage compensation, the report added.

Xiaomi said it is trying to contact the customer and is investigating the matter. "We take such matters seriously as customer safety is of utmost importance for Xiaomi," a spokesperson told Gadgets 360.

"All of our devices go through stringent quality tests. We have been able to establish contact with the customer and are in the process of procuring the damaged product to carefully investigate the case."

Launched in India earlier this year, the Redmi Note 4 has been a sleeper hit success for the company, selling one million units in record time. Xiaomi said last week it had sold more than five million units of the Redmi Note 4 smartphone in the country in six months since debuting here.

Another Redmi Note 4 smartphone was widely claimed to have caught fire last month. After an investigation the company had noted that the widely circulated video which depicted a phone catching fire was not for a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. It did note, however, that one Redmi Note 4 unit - in a separate incident - did catch fire but it was because the owner was using unauthorised charger.
