Sony has started rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo update for its Xperia XZ Premium. The update was originally expected for December, but the Japanese company had evidently sped up the process, and has brought the latest software to its high-end smartphone that was launched with Android 7.1 Nougat at MWC 2017.
The Android Oreo update brings the Xperia XZ Premium closer to the more recently launched Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact, with a feature called 3D Creator. The exclusive feature lets you scan your face, head, food or any physical object to render it as a 3D avatar or a free-form image. Sony claims that the process takes just 60 seconds to transform the content in the 3D form, and once completely rendered, the image can be shared on social media or even 3D printed wirelessly.
Apart from the advanced 3D scanning feature, the Android 8.0 Oreo update on the Xperia XZ Premium brings a Predictive Capture that automatically starts buffering images from the primary camera sensor of the smartphone when it detects a smile. The feature apparently uses some artificial intelligence (AI) tweaks to help you capture the smiling faces of your loved ones. Furthermore, you can pick the best shots from a collection of up to four.
The Sony Xperia XZ Premium's Android Oreo update includes some native improvements as well. There is autofocus burst to capture moving objects with a sharp focus. The smartphone has also received an improved sound quality through some tuning improvements to the front-firing stereo speaker, and Qualcomm aptX HD audio is available to deliver high-quality sounds on compatible wireless headphones. Besides, the update has re-imagined app shortcuts that work with a long-pressing gesture on the app icons.
Notably, some default features from Google's garden are also likely to arrive on the Xperia XZ Premium. You can expect faster updates thanks to Project Treble, and also enjoy additions like Picture-in-Picture, AutoFill and Wi-Fi Aware.
Just like any other firmware rollout, the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Sony Xperia XZ Premium has been released in a phased process. It would, therefore, take some time to reach your device. You can check update availability by visiting 'System updates' from the 'Settings' menu.
