Samsung extends lead over Apple on strong Galaxy S III sales

Samsung's Galaxy S III has helped boost sales of the Korean manufacturer enabling it to dominate Apple in the smartphone category.

As noted by Reuters in an analysts poll, owing to the demand for the Galaxy S III, Samsung sold 50 million smartphones in the second quarter surpassing Apple's forecast iPhone sales of 30.5 million.

IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo said, "Samsung is expected to be the smartphone hero in the second quarter." He further added, "We are also expecting to see the biggest smartphone volumes ever shipped from one single vendor in one quarter, driven by strong demand of the Galaxy portfolio, particularly the Galaxy S II and S III."

Samsung also put an end to Nokia's 14-year long rule in the first quarter as the leader in the cellphone category. As per analysts, Samsung has expectedly sold 15.7 million more phones than Nokia in the second quarter.

For Samsung, analysts attribute the increase in sales to two main factors. One being timing while the other pertaining to the wide range of smartphones launched by the company. Apple however, continues to rely on the sales of next iterations of its iPhone.
