Samsung has officially launched a new quad-core variant of its mid-range Android phablet, Galaxy Grand at a price of Rs. 17,290.
However, the phone has been selling online since last week. The dual-SIM phone is being sold as the Galaxy Grand Quattro and is selling on online retail stores including on Flipkart, HomeShop18 and Indiatimes for Rs. 16,570.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and has 1GB of RAM. It runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and runs Samsung's TouchWiz UI layer on top. It also offers Motion UI that allows users to control the phone when a certain move is detected. For instance flipping the phone can mute it while receiving a call.
Unlike the Grand Duos, which has a 5-inch screen, this smartphone sports a 4.7-inch TFT display with a resolution of 480x800 pixels. The phone's camera has also been downgraded if one compares it to the Galaxy Grand Duos' camera. It sports a 5-megapixel rear camera with auto-focus and a VGA front facing camera, while the Grand Duos comes with an 8-megapixel rear shooter and a 2-megapixel front camera. It comes with 8GB internal memory expandable up to 32GB via microSD card. The Grand Quattro has a 2,000mAh battery.
Announcing the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Grand Quattro, Vineet Taneja, Country Head, Samsung Mobile, said, "Galaxy Grand Quattro is a revolutionary device that combines powerful performance with smart multi tasking and advanced usability .Following the success of the Galaxy Grand introduced in January this year , we are confident that the Galaxy Grand Quattro will meet the needs of consumers looking for the 'Grand' experience in a slightly smaller display."
As a special introductory offer, Samsung is offering a Digital Wallet of Rs. 3,000 valid for 90 days applicable on Games, with the phone.

While Samsung's marketing push has ensured that the phone doesn't go unnoticed, it's facing tough competition from phones from Indian handset makers including the Micromax Canvas HD which boast of quad-core processors at a price point much lesser than that of the Grand Duos. So the launch of the Grand Quattro looks like a move to counter these. It's interesting to note that the Galaxy Grand Quattro was internationally
launched in April as the Galaxy Win and was even listed with the same name on sites such as Infibeam.
