Pixel 3 Naming Scheme Confirmed by Google in AOSP Commit

Google's next flagship smartphone launch might still be a few months away but the Mountain View giant seems to have "accidentally" leaked information around it. According to a code commit spotted on the company's Android Open Source Project (AOSP), the upcoming Pixel flagship will indeed be named the Pixel 3 and the larger variant looks set to be called the Pixel 3 XL. We can expect these variants to the see the light of day at the end of Q3 2018.

While the commit does not share any other information about the Pixel 3 handset, it does signify that Google has begun work on its upcoming flagship. We might see more details appearing in the coming days.

Earlier this week, a report had suggested that Google is working on a mid-range variant in its premium Pixel series. Possibly codenamed "Desire", this smartphone is said to run Android Go or Android Oreo (Go edition) which was announced late last year at the Google For India event. It is also reported to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 600 and Snapdragon 700 series of mobile SoCs, compared to the Snapdragon 800 used in the flagship Pixel range.

To recap, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL were showcased to the world back in October last year. The Pixel 2 sports a 5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) AMOLED display, while the Pixel 2 XL bears a 6-inch QHD+ (1440x2880 pixels) with an 18:9 aspect ratio only on the latter. Both smartphones run the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, coupled with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM. With support for fast charging, the Pixel 2 has a smaller 2700mAh battery and the Pixel 2 XL has a 3520mAh battery unit.
