Nokia X gets first source-built custom Android ROM

The Nokia X family of devices based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) was announced at the sidelines of the MWC 2014. The Nokia X family can run Android apps, and until now users could also root the Nokia X to run Google's Android apps (including the Play Store) and other Google services like the Google Now.

Now according to a report, the Nokia X has received its first source-built AOSP Jellybean 4.1.2 build based on Code Aurora). Senior XDA developer dhacker29, is said to be the person behind this custom Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean ROM for the Nokia X.

According to the report, the firmware relies on source code from Code Aurora branch jb_rel_2.0.3, which comprises of vanilla Android and all specific enhancements and optimisations for Qualcomm's. The list of working features includes network connectivity, camera, FM radio, and multi-SIM support for the dual-SIM Nokia X. Other working features include phone calls (audio issues fixed), Bluetooth, GPS, Media playback, MTP, and sensors (proximity, rotation, brightness, etc.).

The XDA developer describes the build as stable and claims that it is a good alternative to the modified Android skin developed by Nokia.

While the build works fine for the most part, at times the navigation becomes difficult since the device has only hardware back key. Keeping that in mind dhacker29 made a second build with software navigation bar, which apparently makes it easier to navigate.

There are detailed instructions available on how to install the ROM, though you risk damaging the device (and in some cases voiding the warranty), in case something goes wrong during the process.
