In June this year, the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6 Android smartphones were launched in India from the house of HMD Global, the company now selling Nokia branded smartphones. At the time of launch, the company announced that Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 will be offline exclusive smartphones, while the high-end Nokia 6 will be available for registration on Amazon from July 14. With Nokia 3 already out in the markets, the pre-bookings for another offline exclusive smartphone Nokia 5 have begun from Friday, July 7. Having said that, it's still unclear when it will actually be available to customers.
The Nokia 5 was launched at a price of Rs. 12,899 for the offline market in India. Alongside the launch, HMD Global said Nokia 5 pre-bookings will be carried out via select mobile retail outlets across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Calicut.
In addition, Nokia 5 buyers will also receive launch offers such as Vodafone's 4GB extra data per month with a 1GB recharge of Rs. 142 (prices may vary from circle to circle). The offer is valid for 3 months or 3 recharges (whichever comes first), meaning users will get 5GB data at the price of 1GB. Postpaid customers have the same offer for 3 consecutive billing cycles if their postpaid plan features 1GB or higher data plan. Customers will also get Rs. 2,500 off (Rs. 1,800 on hotels & Rs. 700 off on domestic flights) on Makemytrip.com.
Starting Friday, Nokia 5 will be available for pre-bookings across the cities mentioned by HMD Global at the time of the smartphone's launch. While the Rs. 12,899 price tag of the Nokia 5 is tempting, there are many smartphones that it competes with. Within the price range of Rs. 11,000 to Rs. 14,000, its direct competitors are Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Moto G5, Yu Yureka Black, and Oppo A57. Unlike these smartphones, the Nokia 5 will not be available on any of the e-commerce websites and interested customers will have to go major mobile outlets of the respective cities.
The Nokia 5 comes with a fingerprint scanner mounted on the home button and sports a 5.2-inch HD (720x1280 pixel) display. It runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC coupled with 2GB of RAM. It comes with 16GB of inbuilt storage, which is expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB). Nokia 5 packs a 13-megapixel camera on the back along with a flashlight and while an 8-megapixel sensor sits at the front.
The design of Nokia 5 is highlighted with a "seamless aluminium 6000 series" body that wraps around the edges for a smooth, rounded shape, which the company says is a "perfect fit for those who need great design, specs at its price." It measures 149.7x72.5x8.05mm and houses a 3000mAh non-removable battery.
