Nobody Made Any Money in Windows Phone, Says Huawei Executive

Huawei has reasoned out why the company has been concentrating more on Google's Android platform rather than Microsoft's Windows Phone.

While talking to the Seattle Times, Huawei's head of international media affairs, Joe Kelly said that the company (Huawei) "didn't make any money in Windows Phone."

He even claimed that none of the companies manufacturing Windows Phone handsets made any money. "Nobody made any money in Windows Phone," Kelly added.

Further, Kelly also revealed that the company after launching two Windows Phone powered handsets - Huawei Ascend W1 and Huawei Ascend W2 - has put "its plans for future Windows Phone on hold".

However, he confirmed that Huawei might again manufacture Windows Phone-based handsets if the market changes. "One area Huawei is unlikely to return to, unless the market changes: Windows Phone," Kelly stated.

The publication also took Joe Kelly's take on a recent report by market research firm that claimed that Xiaomi had replaced Huawei to become the third-largest mobile phone vendor in terms of smartphones sold in the third quarter.

According to Kelly, Huawei has been lately concentrating on high-end devices rather than taking on the competition in the budget segment. He said, "We will lose volume in that shift."

"Each phone that is made has got to connect to a network. The way in which it connects to the network will determine how it performs. Because of our legacy running networks, we can build phones that connect much better to networks and perform much better," Kelly added.

Recent data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech suggested that Windows Phone's market share dropped globally.

The data was collected in the period between September 2013 and September 2014, and indicated Windows Phone's market share saw a drop of roughly 0.3 percent across the top five markets in Europe.

The report added that two of the biggest market share drops for Microsoft in the one year period were from Australia with a 3.1 percent drop, and China with a 2.8 percent drop.
