Jolla, the company started by ex-Nokia employees to continue working on the abandoned MeeGo OS, announced last week that it had raised $1 million via a crowdfunding campaign for its first tablet. Now, Jolla has also announced a EUR 100 price cut for its Jolla Smartphone, which brings its cost down to EUR 249 (roughly Rs. 19,000).
The EUR 100 price cut is only applicable for a short period of time, and quantities are also limited. The discount is only available until November 25, but the exact number of Jolla smartphones that will be sold at this price is unknown. The company is currently shipping Jolla smartphones to the EU, Switzerland and Norway at the reduced price.
With its crowdfunding effort, which launched on November 19 this year, Jolla was looking to raise $380,000 to successfully fund the manufacturing of its first tablet, a target that was achieved within hours of launch. The campaign, at the time of writing, has raised $1,207,315 (roughly Rs. 7.4 crores). Initial backers will receive the tablet for having contributed $189 (approximately Rs. 11,500). All those slots are now sold out. The next lowest funding slab is $209 (approximately Rs. 12,500). The company notes that the tablet will be available in the following regions: EU, Norway, Switzerland, USA, India, China, Hong Kong, and Russia, with a $20 (approximately Rs. 1,200) shipping fee. The Jolla Tablet, which will be powered by the company's Meego-based Sailfish OS, is targeted for a May 2015 launch.
In terms of specifications, the Jolla Tablet will feature a 7.85-inch display with a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels, for a pixel density of 330ppi. The tablet will run Sailfish OS 2.0 and will be powered by an unspecified 1.8GHz quad-core 64-bit Intel processor alongside 2GB of RAM. The tablet will include 32GB of built-in storage and will support expandable storage via microSD card (up to 32GB). The tablet will also sport a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front camera. The rear camera will record full-HD videos at 60fps.
The Jolla Tablet will have a 4,300mAh battery. The Wi-Fi only device also supports Bluetooth and GPS. The Jolla Tablet will feature an accelerometer, light sensor, and proximity sensor. It will measure 203x137x8.3mm and weigh 384 grams.
