While you might be impressed with the design or display of the iPhone X, it also appears to offer remarkable camera results. DxOMark Image Labs says the new iPhone model has done well, and while not displacing the Google Pixel 2 from its number one spot, it has managed to beat other leaders in terms of still photography and trump the iPhone 8 Plus as well.

The iPhone X got a score of 101 for still photography, getting the top rank, and surpassing the performance results of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

While the iPhone X has a similar dual-camera setup to the iPhone 8 Plus; there are two 12-megapixel camera sensors -- one with a wide-angle f/1.8 lens and optical image stabilisation (OIS). But both the iPhone models have different DxOMark Mobile scores due to the presence of an improved telephoto lens on the flagship iPhone model along with a wider, f/2.4 lens that supports OIS. Apple has also tweaked the software for its top-end model to give its best through features such as Portrait Lighting and an enhanced bokeh effect.

Compared with the iPhone 8 Plus, DxOMark reports that the iPhone X does better in terms of exposure, colour, texture, noise, and artefacts. Some noticeable improvements also exist on the part of optical zoom.

The still image photography on the iPhone X has received a boost through enhanced exposures, HDR mode, accurate colour rendering detailed results with low noise and a natural-looking bokeh effect in the Portrait mode, as reported by DxOMark engineers.

However, video results of the iPhone X are not on par with the still images. The handset scored 89 points on video photography, identical to the iPhone 8 Plus. Further, the overall score of 97 points puts the iPhone X into second place, alongside the Huawei Mate 10 Pro - one step behind the Pixel 2 that received 98 points. DxOMark conducted certain tests that examine different aspects of the camera performance of the new iPhone under several lighting conditions.

Apple has enabled the DCI-P3 colourspace for capturing photos through the iPhone X to match its OLED display. Also, there is HEIF (High-Efficiency Image Format) to provide better compression for similar image quality.
