Apple has revealed that 78 percent of all iOS devices released in the past four years have been updated to iOS 12 by the end of 2018. The Cupertino-based company shares the state of iOS ecosystem regularly on its website and as per the last report shared in late-October 2018, the iOS 12 was present on 63 percent of the total iOS devices released since September 2014. According to the company, iOS 12 is now present on 75 percent of the total active iOS devices in the world.
iOS 12, which is the latest available version of the iOS platform, was released back in September, and recently received a minor update to iOS 12.1.2. The latest platform data on the Apple Developer site has also revealed that 17 percent of iOS devices released in the last four years are still on iOS 11, the last major iOS release, whereas 5 percent of the devices are still stuck on older iOS version. The company has not detailed exactly which older iOS versions are these. In terms of the total active iOS devices in the use, 17 percent of the existing active iOS devices are on iOS 11 and 8 percent are running on even older iOS versions.
The Apple data shows a decent growth in terms of the iOS 12 adoption among the iOS users worldwide. Between October 29, 2018 and January 1, 2019, about 15 percent of the active iOS devices upgraded to the latest software version.

In comparison, Google's Android Pie, which was launched on August 1, 2018, didn't even manage to reach 0.1 percent of the total active Android devices till October 26, 2018. Google has not revealed the updated Android distribution numbers since. According to a notice on Android Distribution Dashboard webpage, the data feed is currently on maintenance.
Although the iOS updates typically see a faster adoption than Android updates, the performance enhancements introduced in the iOS 12 for the older iPhone models have certainly helped the new software reach more Apple iOS devices quickly. Apple claims that the iPhone 6 Plus showed apps launch 40 percent faster with iOS 12.
To remind you, Apple gathers this data based on the interaction of iOS devices with App Store during the given time-frame.
