Apple has released iOS 12.1.2 as a new software update for all the compatible iPhone models. Unlike some of the recent versions, the latest iOS update doesn't include any noticeable changes but comes with few bug fixes to enhance the experience. The iOS 12.1.2 update fixes bugs related to eSIM activation for the all the new iPhone models, including the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. It also reportedly contain software tweaks to address the ongoing patent battle with Qualcomm, specifically in China. Notably, the iOS 12.1.2 update is limited to iPhone models only.
Among other changes, the official changelog states that the iOS 12.1.2 update carries bug fixes for eSIM activation on the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. The update also addresses an issue that could impact cellular connectivity in Turkey specifically on all the 2018 iPhone models. MacRumors separately got its hands of the China changelog of the iOS 12.1.2 update, and claims a new animation for force closing apps has been included by Apple. The animation now results in the apps shrinking to close, rather than moving up and off the screen.
Apple's formal support page that lists its security updates confirms that iOS 12.1.2 doesn't have any published CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) entries. However, as per a previous Reuters report, the latest software update includes software tweaks in China to essentially address "any possible concern" about Apple's compliance with a court order that banned the sales of its older iPhone models.
Last week, Qualcomm said in a statement that a Chinese court had ordered a ban on sales of some older iPhone models for violating two of its patents. The list of concerned iPhone models included all older from the iPhone 6s through the iPhone X.
Moreover, the two Qualcomm patents that were taken into consideration by the court were reportedly related to switching between apps and resizing and reformatting photos before setting them as a wallpaper.
The iOS 12.1.2 update is compatible with all the iPhone models running iOS 12. To download and install the latest version on your device, go to Settings > General > Software Update and then follow the on-screen instructions.
Your device should be using a Wi-Fi connection to download the over-the-air update. Also, it is recommended to back up your data, and ensuring your device has over 50 percent of charge or connected to a power source before beginning the update process.
