Intel's smartphone and tablet platform road map for 2014 leaked

A new leak reveals Intel's road map for smartphone and tablet chips for 2014 and beyond.

Quoting Taiwan based makers, Digitimes notes that Intel has plans for launching new tablet platforms(SoCs) that include 14nm Cherry Trail which will likely be launched in the third quarter and the 14nm Willow Trail in the fourth quarter of 2014. Reportedly, Intel's Cherry Trail features Intel's 14nm Airmont architecture clocked at 2.7GHz with a GEN 8 GPU for boosting graphics.

The report also mentions the company's plan to launch smartphone SoCs that include 22nm Merrifield at the end of this year, with Moorefield expected in first half of 2014 or later. The company may unveil 14nm Morganfield in the first quarter of 2015, as per the leaks. The Merrifield SoC for smartphone will reportedly have a boost of around 50 percent and an extended battery life if compared to Intel's present smartphone platform, Clover Trail+.

The report also notes that the company is all set to launch its 22nm Bay Trail-based processors with the Silvermont architecture next month, at the Intel Developer Forum and that it is also likely to launch Bay Trail-T processors for tablets which will come with support for both Windows 8.1 and Android 4.2 platforms.

Additionally, Intel Willow Trail & Derivatives series are expected to adopt Intel's 14nm Goldmont architecture coupled with a Gen9 GPU that will enable support for both Windows and Android operating systems.

Intel is likely to hand out samples of Cherry Trail SoCs at the end of 2013 and unveil the platform at Computex 2014 next year in June, as per the report.
