Google's annual developers conference Google I/O is kicking off in San Francisco on Thursday. Google's Senior Vice-President of Products, Sundar Pichai, will be the host of the keynote where Google is expected to provide the first glimpse at the next version of Android, Android M.

Android M is expected come with granular app permissions that will let users control which resources and information an app can access. Android M is also expected to improve upon the battery life and RAM usage of Android smartphones.

At the opening day of I/O, Google is also expected to unveil a new version of Chromecast, its media-streaming dongle. Google is also likely to announce a brand new Photos service, independent of Google Plus, for managing and storing photos.

The other key focus area is expected to be payments. Google is likely to announce a service called Android Pay that will let merchants accept credit card payments from within their mobile apps. It will also come with support for loyalty programs. Google Wallet is likely to be 'reintroduced' as a peer-to-peer payments app that consumers can use to send money to each other directly.
