Xiaomi on Tuesday launched a new budget smartphone - Redmi 6 - alongside another handset Redmi 6A in China. The Redmi 6 is the successor to Xiaomi's 2017 smartphone, Redmi 5, and will compete in the saturated low-priced handset segment. The new phone comes with features such as Face Unlock, an 18:9 display, a horizontal dual camera setup, Xiao Ai assistant, and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The camera in the Redmi 6 is also touted to be equipped with AI-based capabilities. We take a closer look at the Redmi 6 price and specifications and compare them with its rivals such as Realme 1, Honor 7C, and Samsung Galaxy J4.

The 'Made in India' Realme 1 was launched in India last month, the first smartphone in the new Oppo brand for the country. The smartphone's styling is similar to the 'glossy diamond-cut design' seen on recent offerings from Oppo. The Honor 7C, on the other hand, was also launched in India last month. The smartphone from Huawei's sub-brand Honor was first launched in China in March. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy J4 was launched earlier this month, as a part of Samsung's Make for India initiative. It brings features like Adaptive Wi-Fi, Advanced Memory Management, App Pair, and Samsung Mall. Let's see how the three compare

The Redmi 6 has been priced at CNY 799 (roughly Rs. 8,400) in China, for the 3GB RAM/ 32GB inbuilt storage variant. It will be available for CNY 999 (roughly Rs. 10,500) for the model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage. The smartphone will be made available in its first sale in the home country starting June 15.

Coming to the Realme 1 price in India, it starts at Rs. 8,990 for the 3GB RAM and 32GB storage variant and goes up to Rs. 10,990 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant, while the top-model with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant is available at Rs. 13,990. It comes in Diamond Black, Moonlight Silver, and Solar Red colour options. The handset comes bundled with a free case and a free screen protector.

When the Honor 7C was launched in China, the 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage variant of the handset was priced at CNY 899 (roughly Rs. 9,200), while the 4GB RAM/ 64GB inbuilt storage model was launched for CNY 1,299 (roughly Rs. 13,400). The Honor 7C price in India, on the other hand, starts at Rs. 9,999 for the 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage variant, going up to Rs. 11,999 for 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant.

Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy J4 price in India starts at Rs. 9,990 for the 2GB RAM/ 16GB inbuilt storage variant, going up to Rs. 11,990 for the 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage variant.

The Redmi 6 runs MIUI 9 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box, and sports a 5.45-inch HD+ (720x1440 pixels) display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and an 80.7 percent screen-to-body ratio. As for internals, the budget smartphone is powered by an octa-core 12nm MediaTek Helio P22 SoC (clocked at 2GHz), paired with 3GB/ 4GB of RAM.

In terms of optics, the Xiaomi Redmi 6 gets horizontal dual camera setup at the back, with a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor, both with a 1.25 micron pixels and AI capabilities. On the front, the smartphone gets a 5-megapixel selfie sensor, with AI-based beautification features as well as Face Unlock. There is 32GB/ 64GB of inbuilt storage, expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB), with its own card slot.

Connectivity options on the Redmi 6 include 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi, GPS/ A-GPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and Micro-USB. Sensors on board include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, infrared, and proximity sensor. The Redmi 6 measures in at 147.5x71.5x8.3mm, and weighs 146 grams. It is powered by a 3000mAh battery.

In contrast, the dual-SIM Realme 1 runs ColorOS 5.0 based Android 8.1 Oreo and sports a 6-inch full-HD+ (1080x2160 pixels) display. The smartphone is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P60 SoC, coupled with 3GB, 4GB, and 6GB RAM options, alongside a dual-core AI-specific chip. On the back, there is a 13-megapixel camera sensor with an LED flash and an 8-megapixel camera sensor on the front. The smartphone also uses Oppo's AI Beauty 2.0 feature to beautify shots using 296-point facial recognition. Additionally, it includes a Face Unlock feature that is claimed to unlock the screen in just 0.1 seconds. There are also AR stickers that work with both the front and rear camera sensors.

The Realme 1 comes with 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB inbuilt storage options that all are expandable via microSD card through a dedicated card slot. On the connectivity front, there is dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS/ A-GPS, Micro-USB, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The smartphone packs a 3410mAh battery and measures 156x75.3x7.8mm.

The dual SIM Honor 7C runs EMUI 8.0 on top of Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box. It sports a 5.99-inch HD+ (720x1440 pixels) IPS display with a pixel density of 268ppi and a 2.5D curved glass. The phone is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC, paired with 3GB of RAM.

In the camera department, Honor 7C bears a dual camera setup on the back with a 13-megapixel primary sensor and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor with autofocus and f/2.2 aperture. Additionally, the phone has an 8-megapixel front camera for selfies and video calling. The selfie camera has fixed focus and f/2.0 aperture. Honor 7C comes with 32GB/ 64GB of inbuilt storage expandable via microSD card. There is a 3000mAh battery under the hood.

Connectivity options on the phone include the likes of 4G LTE, 3G, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Micro-USB, and FM radio. Sensors on board are a fingerprint sensor, proximity sensor, light sensor, and ambient light sensor. Dimensions of the phone are 158.3x76.7x7.8mm and weight is 164 grams.

The dual-SIM (Micro) Samsung Galaxy J4 runs Samsung Experience on top of Android Oreo out-of-the-box, and sports a 5.5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) Super AMOLED display with an 16:9 aspect ratio. The handset is powered by a quad-core Exynos 7570 SoC, paired with 2GB or 3GB of RAM. In terms of optics, the Galaxy J4 gets a 13-megapixel rear camera sensor with an LED flash and support for full-HD (1080p) video recording. On the front, the phone bears a 5-megapixel selfie sensor with LED selfie flash. As for storage, the phone comes with 16GB or 32GB of inbuilt storage, expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB). There is a 3000mAh battery with a claimed battery life of up to 20 hours.

Connectivity options on the Samsung Galaxy J4 include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a Micro-USB port. Lastly, the smartphone measures 151.7x77.2x8.1mm and weighs 175 grams.
