Xiaomi at an event on Tuesday unveiled an upgraded variant of the Mi 5 flagship smartphone. The new Xiaomi Mi 5s and the bigger Mi 5s Plus spors an all-metal body and come powered with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor.

Xiaomi Mi 5s will be available in two variants starting at a price of CNY 1,999 (roughly Rs. 20,000), while the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus, which will also come in two variants, will be available at a starting price of CNY 2,299 (roughly Rs. 22,900). Both the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus will go on sale in China beginning Thursday. Unfortunately, Xiaomi is yet to announce rollout details of the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus for other markets including India.

Display
The all-new Xiaomi Mi 5s sports a 5.15-inch full-HD display with 600-nit brightness and 95 percent NTSC color gamut. The original Xiaomi Mi 5 also came with a similar display set-up and much like the new Mi 5s, used 16 LED lights. Both the Mi 5 and Mi 5s come with pixel densities of 428ppi. Notably, the 4GB RAM + 128GB storage variant of the Mi 5s sports a pressure sensitive display, though the company hasn't detailed what additional interface options this brings.

The Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus, on the other hand, features a bigger 5.7-inch full-HD display with 550-nit brightness and 94 percent NTSC color gamut. It comes with a pixel density of 386ppi.

Processor, memory, and storage
Under the hood, the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus are powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor. Though, both differ based on clock speeds. The Mi 5s is clocked at 2.15GHz while the Mi 5s Plus is clocked at 2.35GHz. The original Mi 5 was powered by a Snapdragon 820 clocked at 1.8GHz.

Both the new Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus come in two variants. The Mi 5s comes in 3GB RAM with 64GB storage as well as 4GB RAM with 128GB storage models. The Mi 5s Plus comes in 4GB RAM with 64GB storage, and 6GB RAM and 128GB storage models.

To recall, the Mi 5 was launched in three variants in China featuring: 3GB of RAM with 32GB storage; 3GB of RAM with 64GB storage, and 4GB of RAM with 128GB storage. The Chinese company however unveiled just the basic 3GB of RAM with 32GB storage model in India earlier this year.

Fingerprint scanner
The Xiaomi Mi 5s bears an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor on its home button. The sensor is placed under glass and it is claimed to not get damaged with use. Xiaomi has also claimed that it offers the same level of accuracy and speed as regular planar fingerprint sensor. The Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus on the other hand sports a fingerprint sensor on the rear panel.

The original Mi 5 came with a regular planar fingerprint scanner that was embedded on the home button.

Camera
Xiaomi Mi 5s sports a 12-megapixel rear camera with Sony IMX378 CMOS sensor, f/2.0 aperture, and PDAF. It is capable of recording 4K videos apart from 1080p and 720p videos. It also sports 4-megapixel front camera, with large 2-micron pixels. Xiaomi touts that the Mi 5s comes with ultra-light-sensitive camera.

The Mi 5s Plus, on the other hand, sports dual-camera setup at the rear. One camera is meant to capture colour images, while the second captures back and white images, helping provide better colour accuracy and depth sensing. Both sensors are 13-megapixel, and the setup supports PDAF, HDR, raw image support, and dual-LED flash. It also sports a 4-megapixel front-facing camera. Much like the Mi 5s, the Mi 5s Plus also supports 4K, 1080p, and 720p videos.

The original Mi 5 came with 16-megapixel rear camera with OIS, f/2.0 aperture, and two-tone flash. It also came with a 4-megapixel front camera, again with large 2-micron pixels.

Battery
In terms of battery, both the new Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus get a bump compared to the Mi 5. The new Mi 5s packs a 3200mAh battery while the Mi 5s Plus packs a large 3800mAh battery. To compare, the Mi 5 came with 3000mAh battery.

Much like the Mi 5, the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus sport USB Type-C and come with Quick Charge 3.0 for fast charging.

Others
The new Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus sport metal brushed body. The Mi 5s measures 145.6x70.3x8.2mm and weighs 145 grams. The original Mi 5 came with dimensions 144.5x69.2x7.2mm and was lighter at 129 grams. The Mi 5s Plus measures 154.6x77.7x7.9mm and weighs 168 grams. Both the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus support 4G dual SIMs much like the Mi 5.
