Seagate-owned brand LaCie has not yet detailed the pricing of the Porsche Design Mobile Drive, but says it will be available in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities when launched in the second quarter. The hard drive is quite slim at 11mm (for 500GB) or 15mm (for 1TB and 2TB), and is designed to match the new 12-inch MacBook's 13.1mm thickness.
Clad in a 3mm-thick aluminium shell, the LaCie Porsche Design Mobile Drive will come with an adapter for backward compatibility with Type-A USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports. When used with USB 3.0, it offers theoretical transfer speeds of up to 5Gb/s, and on USB 2.0, speeds up to 480Mb/s.
Compatible with OS X's Time Machine, the LaCie Porsche Design Mobile Drive will allow for easy backups for Mac users. Users also get access to the company's LaCie Private-Public, LaCie Backup Assistant, and Eco Mode software. LaCie says the hard drive was designed especially for Mac users and also touts the similar "stylish, sophisticated aluminium finish" to the new 12-inch MacBook.
The new 12-inch Apple MacBook has only a single USB Type-C port used for charging the laptop, connecting peripherals, and delivering DisplayPort video output. To simultaneously charge the laptop and connect the LaCie drive, as several publications note, users will have to either buy a USB-C hub, or a USB-C adapter from Apple which includes a regular USB port as well as a USB-C passthrough port.
