Apple has released the v10.8.5 supplemental update for OS X Mountain Lion, as well as an updated version of iTunes.

The OS X v10.8.5 Supplemental Update is recommended for all users running OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.5. The update:

  • Resolves an issue that may prevent certain applications from using the FaceTime HD camera on mid-2013 MacBook Air systems.
  • Fixes an issue that may cause external drives to be ejected after the computer goes to sleep.
  • Addresses an issue that may prevent HDMI audio from working after waking from sleep.
  • Fixes an issue that may prevent certain USB Bluetooth adapters from working.

The update also includes a security update for an issue that could allow a local user to modify Directory Services records with system privileges by bypassing password validation. Apple says the issue has been addressed through improved credential validation.

As usual, to download and install the update, click the Apple menu and choose Software Update to check for the latest Apple software via the Mac App Store, including this update. The update's size may vary from computer to computer when installed using Software Update, depending upon what earlier updates you had installed.

You can also download the manual update installer. This is especially useful when you need to update multiple computers but only want to download the update once. These standalone installers are available from Apple Support Downloads.

Apple has also released iTunes 11.1.1, also available via Software update, which resolves an issue that may cause iTunes Extras to display incorrectly, fixes a problem with deleted podcasts, and improves overall stability of the application.
