Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday directed officials to start Wi-Fi facilities at prominent tourist and religious places of the state.

"Providing Wi-Fi facility to tourists at prominent tourist and religious places is necessary. The officials of Reliance Jio should do the work in time bound manner," Yadav said.

Reliance Jio is working in the state to provide 4G services. All important ghats of Varanasi, Kashi Vishwanath temple, Bada Imambara, Ram Manohar Lohia park, Ganeshwar Mishra park of Lucknow, Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri and other such places in Agra, Dudhwa National Park and Katarnia Ghat wildlife sanctuary are in the list of places where Wi-Fi facility is to be provided.

State-run BSNL earlier this month announced it will set up 40,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country, entailing an investment of about Rs. 6,000 crores. The tender for the project is likely to be floated by July and it will be completed by 2018. Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad made the announcement while launching the public Wi-Fi facility at Taj Mahal.

Also earlier this month, telecom major Bharti Airtel said it has received a contract from the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon to launch Wi-Fi services. Users will be able to access free Internet for the first 30 minutes and after that they can buy recharges. Airtel in a statement said, "With this, Airtel has become the preferred partner to provide residents of the Millennium City an opportunity to connect to world-class Internet experiences on the move."
