Global software major Microsoft and global search engine Google bagged the Great Indian Developer Awards 2012 for innovative products and applications at the IT developers' fifth annual summit in Bangalore on Wednesday.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 has been selected in the development environment category and Google Android in the mobile development category for the prestigious awards, instituted by Saltmarch Media, a platform of professionals from diverse sectors with an objective of informing, networking and serving them with information, evaluation and guidance to excel in their jobs.

The awards recognise the product and innovation excellence of software products and tools that aid developer productivity across 11 categories in terms of functionality, usability, bleeding-edge quotient and feedback from the developer ecosystem.

"India like many countries skipped the mainframe, PC and internet revolution but went directly to mobile. The role of mobile and telecommunications has a direct impact on the GDP (gross domestic product) growth as research indicates," Nokia India head of ecosystem Gerard Rego told the developers on the occasion.

If the 1.0 version of the mobile industry was unbundling of products and services via marketplaces, Rego said the 2.0 version would see developing countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) going mobile despite fragmentation and micro-scale of demand and supply chains from mom & pop stores, agriculture and healthcare to governance, big business and to education.

The other award winning products were IBM's Rational Rose in the modelling category; Telerik's TeamPulse in the collaboration category; Collabnet's TeamForge in the change and configuration management category; Dojo's TookKit in the web development category; Oracle's Database 11g in the database category; JBoss' Profiler in the testing category.

Microsoft's Security Essentials and SharePoint 2010 also bagged awards under the security category and the content management category.

"The Great Indian Developer Awards recognise the trailblazing individuals, technologies, and organisations contributing to evangelism, productivity and innovation excellence of the Indian developer ecosystem. The awards highlight product excellence, research and innovation, corporate achievements and the most compelling community efforts among the entire IT developer fraternity across the country," Saltmarch chief executive Dilip Thomas said at the award presentation ceremony.
