Delhi-based MapmyIndia, a provider of digital maps, GPS navigation, and tracking devices, on Wednesday announced the launch of SafeMate, a dedicated personal safety device for women, children, and families. The device is available for purchase exclusively on Flipkart at Rs. 6,990.

Weighing just 50 grams, SafeMate is a matchbox-sized device that can fit in a school bag, purse, or pocket, and uses its built-in GPS and Internet connectivity to securely transmit live locations to the mobile phone and desktop. An SOS button can be pressed in case of an emergency, which sends an email and SMS alerts to designated people.

Rashmi Verma, Director and Co-Founder, MapmyIndia, said in an emailed statement that the initial response from parents, young children, and women who have used SafeMate has been positive. "The alarming increase in crime against women and children in India spurred us into thinking about how we could use our sophisticated technology to provide safety to individuals. We wanted to keep things simple so that the technology can be used in the most stressful situation. The result is SafeMate." she said.

Guardians can track loved ones by using the SafeMate companion app available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, and on the MapmyIndia website.

Safety apps use the mobile phone's GPS continuously, and tend to drain the battery. SafeMate does not require a mobile phone, and has a battery life of three to four days, the company said. SafeMate comes loaded with with Rs. 3,600 worth of SIM card connectivity charges and subscription fees. The service can be subsequently renewed on a monthly basis for Rs. 300, and has a separate SMS package for top ups, priced between Rs. 250 to 500.
