BitTorrent Surf extension turns Chrome, Firefox into torrent clients

BitTorrent has released a beta version of BitTorrent Surf, a Chrome and Firefox extension that brings torrent integration to web browsers. It allows users to discover, download and manage torrents, directly from within the web browser. BitTorrent had released the alpha version of the Surf extension for Chrome in January.

Surf essentially essentially makes the web browser a torrent client, with discovery and downloading built in, eliminating the need for torrent clients like uTorrent and Transmission. It automatically detects torrent search sites, and also allows users to add a particular torrent site to create a custom search engine. A status window for easy download progress monitoring is throw-in as well. BitTorrent Bundle recommendations from BitTorrent are also included. The recommendation engine, according to the company, would offer relevant content suggestions. It says that recommendation and prioritisation will help in driving visibility for BitTorrent partner artists, giving BitTorrent a monetization opportunity in the process.

Previously, BitTorrent had also launched SoShare, a service that allows users to share large files. Currently in public Beta, the service is available on Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari for Mac; and Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer for Windows through plug-ins, and offers free sharing for any number of files up to a Terabyte (1024GB) at once.
